Mark Di Suvero presented by Storm King

Governors Island summer exhibition of sculpture is organized by the Storm King Arts Center and features a dozen huge works by Mark di Suvero, master of large-scale pieces in steel.

This is the first time Storm King has organized an exhibit outside its 500-acre campus in the Hudson valley north of West Point. Its permanent installations include works by Calder, Noguchi, Nevelson, Serra and Maya Lin, among others.

In Storm King's words, di Suvero "helped to shape our notion of modern sculpture." He is known for sculpting I-beams and salvaged steel into massive pieces.

This summer's exhibition draws from private collections as well as Storm King's own. It includes a free indoor gallery of photos of di Suvero pieces at Storm King and a video of him installing his sculpture there.

Mark di Suvero was born in China, grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and has lived in New York for more than 50 years. In the 1980's he led a coalition of artists in transforming an abandoned riverfront landfill and illegal dumpsite next to his Long Island City studio into Socrates Sculpture Park, a 4.5-acre urban version of Storm King.
